RUMOURS that Leigh Centurions are in talks with Wales Rugby Union star centre Scott Gibbs are untrue.

Head coach Paul Terzis has dismissed the stories as 'speculation and fantasy.'

"No way are we interested in Gibbs or have had any discussion with him. I amazes me where these stories start.

"It could be that Gibbs is looking for a return to Rugby League after missing out on selection for the British Lions tour and his subsequent withdrawal from the Wales tour to Japan in the summer. It could be that people are putting two and two together and coming up with five."

Gibbs, who had a successful stint in League with St Helens in the mid-1990's, is the current Swansea captain and would still command a hefty signing-on fee and contract.

The rumour machine is likely to be cranked up into top gear over the next couple of weeks as Leigh declare their intention to strengthen the Hilton Park squad.

Quality

Terzis revealed that the Centurions are looking to build the basis of a Super League side now to avoid a rush to sign quality players if they are accepted into the elite division in the summer.

They are currently in negotiation with two Super League players and hope to have one, or both, in place before the NFP signing deadline on June 18.

"We've started the process of planning for the prospect of promotion and have sounded out a number of potential recruits," Terzis confirmed.

Despite the fact that Leigh are eight points clear at the top of the table Terzis feels that now is the time to act.

"We are always looking at ways to strengthen the club," he says. "We feel it is important that we try to strengthen now, not only to improve our chances of winning the Grand Final, but in order to ease the transition if we did get promoted."

Terzis won't reveal any names at this stage but said that talks are on-going between the players and their respective clubs.
