FOR approximately 20 years I have been privileged enough to witness a series of heart-warming real life short stories.
They all have one common denominator and encompass a group of people who I am in awe of -- the NHS in Bolton and its legion of dedicated staff.
My uncle passed away a few days ago after a lengthy struggle against a number of complicated health problems. Over the span of two decades I have seen him treated in various wards at the Royal Infirmary, and, latterly, in the Urology, Audiology, A&E and Wards E3 and C3 at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
On a number of occasions he entered these premises in very poorly conditions, always emerging A1, as he would put it, enabling him to soldier on with his life. Some of these procedures would have been a harrowing experience for a person half his age, but, due to the service he received, he always bounced back. A fortnight ago, sadly, he was admitted for the last time. However, from the moment the paramedics and ambulance service arrived, he again was afforded care and attention good enough for any head of state.
I know how much Laurence appreciated all these carers, from his GPs to the district nurses and hospital staff that catered for his well being over his lifetime and I write this acknowledgement on his behalf, knowing he would have insisted on it.
I truly wish it was in my power to cite everyone concerned for honours to mankind and society and I only hope that these few words adequately convey the gratitude Laurence felt and the peace and comfort it afforded him in his final hours of need. God bless.
