SKIPPER John Crawley was out for one as Lancashire made a disastrous start in the chase for Yorkshire's formidable 467-9 declared at Old Trafford today.

Crawley was lbw to Chris Silverwood but Lancs rallied by lunch with Andy Flintoff (19) in hard-hitting mood as they reached 37-1.

Ashes failure Craig White earlier completed a career-best 186 after being pushed up the order to open with Matthew Wood after the first four sessions of the match were lost to rain.

He responded by totally dominating a lacklustre Lancashire attack in an opening stand of 309 with Wood (115) to put some pace in a game in which county champions elect Yorkshire want to force a result to preserve their lead at the top of the table.

Skipper David Byas, feeling there were enough runs on the board to set about bowling Lancashire out twice, declared just before lunch.
