THERE is something about children and railways that can constitute a fatal attraction.

Not too surprising, then, that Moses Gate station at Farnworth now figures in the 20 worst "hotspots" for vandalism in the North-west this year.

Trains have been pelted with stones, and items -- from stones to supermarket trolleys - have been left on the track. Stations themselves have also been targeted by yobs.

Now, in what sounds like a very useful move, railways chiefs are to instal cameras on trains travelling through the Bolton area.

The cameras, used throughout the region, could identify troublemakers at what has become a particularly busy time for vandalism and trespass: the school summer holidays.

During the last year, Bolton, Farnworth, Moses Gate and Bromley Cross stations have all been the target of vandalism and trespass.

And, judging by the type and frequency of these many incidents, it really is a miracle that no-one has been killed or seriously injured.

A stone coming through the window of a speeding train -- a window always likely to carry passengers on the other side -- can cause very nasty injuries.

Objects on the line put all those on the train in danger. With recent rail crashes in mind, it is not too difficult to imagine the massive destruction that can result.

Railtrack North West staff armed with video and stills cameras on trains will be sitting up front with the drivers to record the action as it occurs.

This means that vital footage will be available that could then be used in court, or as a real-life deterrent to local youngsters when shown in schools.

However, it really is up to parents to stress the dangers involved in playing around rail lines and at stations. As well as causing possible injury to others, youngsters are at real risk themselves.

It is vital that they know where children are and what they are doing, even during the long school holidays.

We hope that this latest initiative works, and results in more youngsters being caught, and stopped, if they take part in vandalism.

Rail travellers have the right to journey in safety. The Government encourages us all to use public transport more often, and anything which gives us greater confidence to do so must be welcomed.
