journey
from Harper
Green to
Canada THIS photograph has come from Tom and Margaret Green, former Boltonians who emigrated to Canada in 1956, and now live in Alberta. The picture is of Harper Green School, Class 4a, in 1949, and Tom says that he is on the right of the front row.
He names most of the others (a couple of names missing) as Back row: Ken Dewhurst, Alan Ashworth, Ray Bennett, Joe Gerrard, Geoff Greenwood. Foreground standing, Fred Hayworth, Jos. Bradley, ?, Ken Chadwick, ?. Kneeling: ? Hodkinson, Jack Brett, Jeff Drake and Tom Green.
Tom tells me that after leaving Harper Green, he was apprenticed to an engineering company in Trafford Park, and became a draughtsman, while Margaret (maiden name Waddicar) worked in the drawing office at Dobson and Barlow, and later at De Havilland. "We met while Margaret was a student nurse at Townleys Hospital, married at 21, and emigrated in 1956.
"Except for a brief return to Bolton in 1961, when I was employed by Hick Hargreaves, we have lived and worked in almost every Canadian province. I have recently retired. Our last visit to Bolton was in 1998.
"We have been in touch with two of the people in the photograph, one of whom, Geoff Greenwood, and his wife Eileen, still lives in Bolton. We keep in touch with relatives and friends in England, and with our old pal Ray Bennett, who now lives in France and helped me to recall some of the above names."
He ends: "We enjoy your articles, which my cousin Joseph Appleton in New Bury, sends to us.
" Keep up the good work, Joseph!"
