HINDSFORD created arguably the biggest shock in this year's Goldline Trophy - in association with the Bolton Evening News- as their victory over Elton Fold booked their quarter-final place and eliminated Atherton LR.

Hindsford needed three points and got off to a flying start when hitman Matt Toone outjumped the defence to break the deadlock. The lead was compounded with Neil Critchley's close range header on 15 minutes and Elton did not manage to pull one back until Martin Rayner's effort midway through the second half.

Elton will rue the penalty miss that turned the game when Scott Jones made a fine save to deny Dave Wilkes from the spot, and the hosts were punished late on when Critchley's second secured the points. Prestwich Heys are another club to experience the Goldline rollercoaster but now look likely qualifiers after a tumultuous 24 hours in which they have played twice.

Fought back

Atherton Collieries fought back from a goal down to beat the Manchester League side on Saturday, after Prestwich had taken the lead through Paul Thompson's early strike. Nicky Fisher and Steve Denny scored the goals that won the game for the North Western Counties side but Heys bounced back to hammer Bolton County yesterday.

Trevor Howarth had handed County an early advantage but a first half hat-trick from Thompson put Prestwich into a lead that they would never look like losing. Thompson netted his fourth in the second period, with Gary Massey, Anthony Jackson and a Peter Thompson own goal completing the scoresheet.

Atherton Collieries could finalise their place in the last eight with a draw at Brightmet United tonight (6.30pm)to join Daisy Hill, who battled back from 3-1 down to beat long-standing pace-setters of Group D, Pennington 4-3.
