SAM Allardyce moved in for the 33-year-old Euro 96 winner Oliver Bierhoff after running out of patience with French club, Strasbourg, when they failed to respond to his £2.5 million offer for striker Pegguy Luyindula.

Confirming his interest in Bierhoff, Allardyce is reported to have said: "I was told he wants to come to the Premiership so I have told them the figures we could offer."

Having conceded defeat in his attempts to sign Luyindula and fellow Frenchman Sylvain Distin, the 23-year-old Paris St Germain defender, the Wanderers' boss ruled out any further additions to his squad before Saturday's Premiership opener at Leicester.

"Any other signings will be put on the back burner until we can get round to dealing with them," he explained.

"It's now about choosing 11 players and substitutes and focusing on the team for Saturday."
