TWO Bolton motorists were recovering from their ordeal today after their car crashed through a fence and rolled 125 feet down a motorway embankment.

Driver Jason Heggie, aged 30, was taken to Rochdale Infirmary with suspected spinal injuries. Passenger Lisa Fletcher, aged 24, escaped with cuts and bruises but received hospital treatment for shock.

Both motorists were discharged from hospital last night and were today recovering at home after the incident near the Rakewood Viaduct in Littleborough, Rochdale, at 3.30pm yesterday.

Police say Mr Heggie failed to negotiate a bend on a private lane leading to farm beside the M62 motorway. The Lada car crashed through the wooden fence and rolled 125 feet down the embankment, landing in a bog beneath.

Police say the situation could have been a lot worse had the accident occurred on the side of the embankment leading to the motorway.

And Assistant Divisional Officer Deon Webber from Rochdale Fire Station added: "It's amazing that the car managed to stay on its wheels as it fell because if it had rolled we may have had a very different situation on our hands." EMBANKMENT DRAMA: The scene of the accident
