A CAMPAIGN has been launched to encourage gays and lesbians who have been abused or assaulted to report incidents to the police.
A booklet is being distributed across the town to persuade people to "shop" homophobics who make their lives a misery.
Nationwide statistics show that more than 65 per cent of gay and lesbians have been the victim of Crime.
But few report what happens as they fear they will not be treated with respect.
Chief Superintendent Mel Pelham, speaking at the launch of the "Hate Crime" booklet yesterday, said: "There is a problem in Bolton and I think intimidation of gay and lesbians is vastly under-reported.
"This is about improving that situation."
The booklet aims to make it easier for gay and lesbians to contact the police by assuring victims they will be dealt with sensitively.
It gives case studies, including a 31-year-old bisexual male who paid £1,500 to keeps details of his sexuality secret.
He said: "I thought that any action brought by the police would be reported with my name in the press."
Cllr Frank White, a member of the Greater Manchester Police Authority which has worked with many groups on the project, said: "We are setting an example others should follow.
"The police can only protect individuals where crime is reported and hopefully more offenders will be dealt with now."
The 12-page booklet is free and an initial 1,600 copies will be distributed to libraries, health centres and bars. Gays and lesbians can use freephone number 0800 1694675 if they become the victim of crime.
