SO the Premier League season 2001-2002 is about to begin. Who'll be the winners -- who will be the losers?
Someone once said: "All men are equal -- it's just that some men are more equal than others." It's a bit like that in top sport -- but, at this time of year, at least all the teams are equal. But if you were having a bet right now on the outcome of this new season, what sort of odds would you get?
Our new weekly column will keep you in touch with the odds and evens of what promises to be a fantastic year of football. Take this weekend with Wanderers away at Filbert Street. Put a pound bet on Bolton to win 3-0 and you'd get £40 back. Not bad, but what are the other odds?
Bolton to win --
1-0 -- 8/1; 2-0 -- 16/1; 3-0 -- 40/1; 4-0 -- 100.
Or you could have either Holdsworth or Ricketts to score a hat-trick at 80/1.
Bolton to stay up are 2/1 the odds on.
Or, better still, Blackburn to go down are 6/1. The Wanderers are 5000/1 to win the Premiership, 66/1 to lift the FA Cup, or 33/1 to win the Worthington Cup. You'll get 1000/1 for Bolton to finish up as the top-placed Northern team but only 14/1 for them to qualify for Europe either through the league, the cups or the fairplay league. If you backed either Ricketts or Holdsworth to end the season as top premier league scorers, you'd get 200/1.
What about the other teams --
Liverpool are 400/1 to win the treble of Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League.
Fred Done says, if Man United win the Premier League by more than 10 points, he will refund all losing single win bets on the other 19 teams in the top division.
Next week we'll find out what sort of bets you can have on the Ryder Cup in September.
All figures quoted are correct at the time of going to press and available at Done Bookmakers shops throughout the area.
