IRATE parents today demanded action from British Rail following a toddler's lucky escape on a railway line.

Two-years-old Jason Denton was sitting in the middle of the Bolton/Blackburn track at Tonge Moore yesterday in the path of an approaching train. Only four months ago a child aged three was killed by a train about 200 yards away from yesterday's incident, and over the last 25 years the same stretch of line has claimed three other lives.

Angry parents are blaming "inadequate" fencing and an open tunnel which leads to the embankment.

SCIENTISTS in Edinburgh for the British Association meetings heard today what most frightens the small boy in entertainment.

Results of tests on 100 East End boys aged nine to 12, showed that on the wireless Paul Temple easily headed the list, followed by murder plays. Dick Barton was never the popular hero among boys that he was supposed to be, and many more boys said that they had bad dreams after seeing films with an A certificate and listening to wireless programmes for adults than after hearing Dick Barton.

THE Ploughing Day at Horwich, one of those pleasing characteristics for which the farmers of that district are noted, took place on Monday. Mr H. Pimbley, of the Albion Hotel, and cattle dealer, of Chorley, having recently taken Sharples Fold Farm, the farmers of the district brought their teams to give a day's ploughing.

Where 18 teams were so excellent it would be an invidious task to single our any one for special praise. The day was extremely hot, and the ground very hard, making it very arduous labour for the ploughmen.

Mr Pimbley had considerably provided for their needs, and the ploughmen, to the number of 50, sat down to a really good English fare at the house of Mr Robert Lee, Crown Inn, Horwich.
