BUSINESSES in Bolton are being urged to take up the challenge of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise and show that they can compete with the best in the country.

Only a handful of firms in the area have so far applied for details of the awards which are given for exceptional achievements in international trade, innovation and sustainable development.

The closing date for the 2003 Queen's Awards is October 31 this year.

Queen's Awards secretary David Moore said: "We'd very much like to see more businesses in the Bolton area rise to the challenge.

"Over the years the North-west has produced many worthy winners -- including 10 in the 2001 awards -- and we are confident that the region will continue to provide more business champions."
