A GROUP of Bolton housewives are planning their own taxi transport in a bid to beat the "appalling" bus service to the Daubhill area. The women, who all wait for a bus at Shaw Street, near Bolton Institute of Technology, from 5pm onwards every night, claim it is common to wait up to an hour before any bus stops to pick them up.

WATER poured through the roof of a Leigh cinema last night after lead flashing had been opened by the weight of rain - water which had collected during the storm. At the same cinema, the newest in the town, newly fitted carpets got a soaking when the front stalls were flooded as water rushed from a car park outside through one of the major exits.
Many cellars belonging to shops and officer were under water.

August 7, 1876
AT the County Sessions, on Monday, James Dean, Sharples, was charged with stealing five herrings from a shop at Little Bolton, Higher End. P.C. Shackleton stated that on Saturday last, he, along with Police-constable Pope, saw the prisoner in Mrs Clemmett's shop in a drunken condition. On prisoner coming out of the shop he took the herrings from a stand outside and put them in his pocket. Witness followed and apprehended prisoner. - Three days' imprisonment.
ON and since the 1st. inst, the postage on letters addressed to Newfoundland has been reduced to 2d per oz if prepaid. Unpaid letters will be charged double postage on delivery.
