Wanderers were involved in a pre-season Anglo-Scottish Cup tie against Burnley at Turf Moor and suffered a double disappointment.
First they went down to a 1-0 defeat to the Clarets but more seriously with the league programme beckoning, they lost striker Hugh Curran, who was stretchered off in the 7th minute with the injury serious enough to warrant the club doctor strapping the players' legs together.
The news after half-time was that Curran had been taken straight to hospital but the extent of the injury was not known.
The match was decided in the 24th minute when Roy Greaves, attempting to dribble the ball to safety, was caught in possession and Billy Ingham hit a low shot past Barry Siddall in the Wanderers goal.

WANDERERS kicked off the new season at home fixture to Huddersfield but again the 1-1 result had more serious implications.
Goalkeeper Dave Felgate was ruled out for at least a month with damaged knee ligaments after colliding with the Tykes' striker Iffy Onuora late in the first half.
Wanderers fell behind in the 12th minute to Chris Marsden's crisp volley but Tony Philliskirk headed in at the far post to put the scores level. From the BEN, Monday, August 19, 1996
WANDERERS began the task of finding a way back to the Premiership with an away encounter at Port Vale.
The result, a 1-1 draw, hardly had the fans savouring a season of success.
They started well enough with Alan Thompson taking over the departed Sasa Curcic's role in midfierld and firing Wanderers ahead in the 24th minute.
More should have followed but the Wanderers showed their old trait of wasting goal chances and they were made to pay when Tony Naylor grabbed a second half equaliser.
