A SOLDIER from Bolton has gained the distinction of being awarded the prize for best recruit in his troop at the Army training Regiment in Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire.
Gunner Ben Williams, aged 18, of the Royal Artillery, is a former pupil of Little Lever School. He joined the Army in April and completed his 12-week training which included weapon handling, first aid, map reading, survival techniques and physical training.
During an adventure training week he took part in canoeing, climbing and skiing.
Ben will continue training at the Royal School of Artillery near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
He said: "I have made some great friends in training and I have done things I would never normally do as a civilian. I can't wait to get to my unit and start doing the job for real."
Ben's ambition is to join a specialist observation artillery unit.
