The first of several improvements were being introduced at Farnworth public baths to provide better facilities for bathers in February, 1955, when these pictures were taken.
They included the installation of an electric penny-in-the-slot automatic hair-drying machine, an innovation which, according to the caption, "will be greeted enthusiastically by women and girls." Arrangements were also well advanced to provide warm drinks for bathers.
The caption continued: "The introduction of mixed bathing throughout the week has brought with it the problem of increased storage space for bathers' clothes. This has been overcome by utilizing the space beneath the tiered seating at the market end of the baths.
"A doorway has been cut into the tier giving access to ample accommodation for the baskets storing bathers' outdoor clothes."
