A LECTURER at Bolton Technical College has become a member of the most exclusive mountaineering clubs in Great Britain.

Mr Leo Pollard, aged 41, of Medway Park, Stocks Way, Horwich, became the 44th member of the Bob Graham Club at the weekend. To become a member of the club, the entrants have to scale 42 peaks in the Lake District in less than 24 hours.

PRINCESS Anne and Capt. Mark Phillips are to set up home on the 730-acre Gatcombe Park, Gloucestershire - a gift from the Queen.

IT was something of a relief to walk across Trinity station bridge this morning, away from the noise and bustle of the shopping crowds in the town centre. There was perhaps a hurried passenger dashing across the bridge to catch a train, but for the most part, the inhabitants of the bridge were content to take things easy. Many of them were the usual small boys having a morning's "number snatching", but some of them were fond fathers, whose young sons had persuaded them to stop for a few moments to watch the trains go past.

Here and there was an occasional man of leisure propped up against the railings, reading the Test match reports in the morning paper, completely unconcerned about the happenings around them.

SIMON Whaite, a well-known clerk of works residing in Devon-street, Haulgh, has put an end to his life by cutting his throat. He was employed in connection with a church in course of erection at Wavertree, and was found dead in his office there yeaterday morning. He was clerk of works for Bolton Parish Church and some other local edifices.

AT the Salford Borough Police Court on Wednesday, Mr Henry Parkinson, engineer, of Bolton, was summoned for having, contrary to the provisions of the Salford Improvement Act, worked a traction engine within the limits of the borough unrpvided with smoke-sonsuming apparatus. The engine was emitting volumes of dense smoke. The defendant, who admitted the offence, was fined £5 and costs.
