BRITAIN'S inflation rate has taken the biggest dive ever recorded. It plunged to 15.4 per cent in May, and that means the cost of living is at its lowest for over two years.
The massive drop of 3 per cent in the yearly rate - down from 18.9 in April - is the biggest since the Prices Index was started 15 years ago. The slide has lasted for nine months in a row, ever since the peak of 26.9 per cent in August last year.

THOUSANDS of small oblong pieces of cardboard were being unwrapped and stacked on the benches in the booking office at Trinity-st. station today.
They were train tickets, all ready for issue when advance holiday bookings start at 12 noon on Friday.
Mr E. Ricketts, passenger agent, told the Evening News that he expected more than 82,000 tickets to be issued. It is also expected that 2,000 suitcases and travelling bags, sent in advance, will be handled for the holidays.
There should be no trouble leaving Bolton - about 50 extra trains are laid on, in addition to the normal services.

ON Thursday afternoon a deputation from the Westhoughton Local Board waited upon the President of the Local Government Board at Whitehall, for the purpose of furnishing the Local Government Board with the information desired as to the scheme for supplying the district of Westhoughton with water.
The information conveyed was with respect to the futile negotiations of the Bolton Corporation with the Westhoughton Local Board, and was to the effect that the Corporation had absolutely declined to sell water at a lower price than 6d per (2p) per 1,000 gallons, a cost that did not include that of forming a reservoir and distributing the water in the district of Westhoughton, so that the actual cost to the Board would probably amount to 7d or 8d per 1,000 gallons; whereas the scheme of the Board would only cost, including all expenses, about 3d per 1,000 gallons.
The President, Mr Sclater-Booth, complimented the deputation upon the way in which they had put forward their case, promised it should have his attention, and that a definite course of action at a very early date should be decided upon, and communicated to the Board.
