THE multi-million pound Xanadu leisure and snowdome complex planned for Leigh has today been turned down.
Controversial Xanadu -- which many felt would provide a vital boost to jobs and the local economy -- and a new railway station planned at Kenyon on the Manchester to Liverpool line -- have both been thrown out by the Secretary of State.
The leisure complex was earmarked for land at Pennington and was backed by Leigh MP Andy Burnham and Makerfield's Ian McCartney but the Secretary of State upheld a Government Inspector's opinion that there were more negative than positive features of both plans.
Xanadu's benefits were judged to be offset by the loss of an informal recreation site and the Kenyon station and link road would be inappropriate Green belt developments.
Chris Maile, chairman of the "No Xanadu" campaign was delighted at the news today. He said: "It is a brilliant decision. We will be holding a meeting to celebrate."
