NEW Bury residents are coming up with an "aMAZEing" scheme to turn a derelict tip into a fun-filled eco-friendly adventure site.
The Gateway Project, which brings together local people with experts from community group Bolton Wise and innovative artists, is turning the 55-metre site behind Kwik Fit into an unusual community area largely using recycled materials.
The centrepiece of the scheme will be the area's first maze, created from mounds of soil covered in wild flowers.
Ed Hall, Bolton Wise's partnership landscape architect, who has designed the site, has created the maze in the triangular shape of the recycling symbol found on packaging.
"I don't think Bolton has ever seen anything like this before," he said.
Surrounding the maze will be different areas all designed to be interactive and provide something for all ages.
There will be an assault course, skateboard track, two community gardens, a football and ball pitch, a musical play area and an area filled with play animals made out of logs and boulders.
A small amphitheatre will be at the centre of the maze where people can put on mini plays and shows.
"People are very excited about this," said Mr Hall.
"The land has been derelict for about 20 years but rather than just providing play equipment we are trying to create a space which inspires creative, imaginative play.
"Just about everything on the site is being reclaimed or recycled."
work on the scheme is due to begin in October once the several thousand pounds' funding in Government grants needed for the project is finalised, but the site has already been cleared of rubbish, including a burned out car.
Artists have also begun working with local children to make items which will be included in the gardens.
The recycling theme even extends to the project's entrance near the junction of Worsley Road and Westland Avenue.
Flooring will be created out of crushed cans, old tyres and bits of plastic all set into hard wearing resin.
The project is due to be completed by the end of this year.
Mr Hall added: "It will be a real focal point for the community and dramatically improve the reputation of New Bury and Farnworth."
