MANOR Fives teams paid their respects in the John Hodson Memorial Tournament.
A total of 16 teams took part in the first annual memorial tournament. John's team-mates and friends played under the names of Inter Clubbing, Dogs Ballearics and Real Ducie.
Other teams included 'Champions' league winners, GH 5, albeit under strength, Burnden Boys from the sevens and double title winners and tournament favourites Casinos.
All four groups had to wait for the conclusion of the final group games before the quarter-finals were complete. The pick of the four ties was Casinos versrus KAIs 5 from which a fast approaching veteran with dodgy knees called Marcus Brown turned out to assist his juniors.
The game, with the likes of Paul Swift, Warren Sumner, Brown and Lee Nichols, produced banter, trickery and gamesmanship to the max. Final score 3-3.
The immediate sudden death spot kicks saw Brown, Swift and Sumner all have success, but a two-handed save from Casinos' Brian Taylor ensured his team's place in the semi finals.
In the semi finals how fitting that two of John's teams were drawn against each another, thus a John Hodson team in the final.
The John Hodson final was contested between Inter Clubbing and Casinos. Casinos raced to a 5-0 lead on the back of some storming passing and movement but with a 5-0 comes complacency that allowed in Ian Molyneaux to clinically slot home a hat-trick and, with it, the "Player of the Tournament" award. Final score 5-3.
Winners: Chris Walsh's Casinos, runners-up: Gavin Denton's Inter Clubbing, best player: Ian Molyneaux and best goalkeeper: Brian Taylor.
John's family wish to thank everyone who supported their son's memorial tournament.
