THE first stage of the M60 bridgeworks have been completed -- but more motorway misery is in store for commuters.

The second stage of the roadworks starts next Tuesday at 9pm at the Greater Manchester Outer Ring Road at Junction 12.

Lane closures will be in operation on the offside lane, near Eccles, instead of the nearside which has previously been affected.

Drivers will not be able to leave the carriageway at Junction 13 and will have to follow diversions via Junction 11 of the M62.

The £2.7 million repair contract for the seven bridges is not expected to finish until February.

Steve Bell, project manager for the Highways Agency, said: "This is an essential project but we know it causes inconvenience to drivers, so we are delighted that the first stage has been completed in time.

"However, it is important that drivers note the new traffic management system and plan their journeys from Tuesday."

The second phase will last two weeks with several major traffic changes scheduled to take place for the remainder of the project.
