BOLTON motorists have been hit by further roadworks as one of the busiest routes into the town was closed.

Workmen from Transco and Bolton Council have started work resurfacing Lea Gate and replacing gas supply pipes along the road in both directions -- completely sealing off Harwood.

And police told the BEN they are expecting the closure to cause traffic nightmares across the area.

Diversion

The route will be completely sealed off between Tottington Road and Bradshaw Brow for an estimated five weeks (fromt July 30) with a long diversion in place for motorists.

Highways chiefs claim the joint Bolton Council and Transco project will stop the road being closed twice in one year. But local businesses fear they will be hit in the pocket.

Sgt Kevin Donnellan of Bolton Police Traffic Unit said the closure of Lea Gate would force traffic to use the diversion -- creating a further build up of traffic along other roads.

"It is going to cause problems through Breightmet along New Lane, Stitch mi' Lane and Thicketford Road. We think that traffic will be very heavy along those areas."

Police are also concerned that motorists will hunt for new quicker routes around Harwood, missing out the diversion.

Traffic heading towards Harwood from Bolton will not be able to enter Lea Gate at the Crofters Hotel traffic lights. Motorists will be diverted from Tonge Moor Road, along Thicketford Road, New Lane, Stitch mi' Lane and Hardy Mill Road. Residents driving to Bolton from Harwood should use the diversion in reverse.

All diversions will be clearly signposted.
