LONG delays are expected on the M60 early next month when essential bridge works begin on a stretch of road near Eccles.
Drivers travelling south from Bolton are being advised to use public transport.
And they are being told to brace themselves for chaos as the roadworks could take as long as six months to complete.
Lengthy tailbacks are expected from junction 11 to 13. It is one of the country's busiest junctions, used by 135,000 vehicles a day.
The road is a key link to Merseyside, Manchester Airport and the Trafford Centre.
But despite the impact it will have on motorists, warning notices placed by the Highways Agency in newspapers across the county -- including the BEN -- carry an incorrect telephone number.
Angry drivers have made repeated frustrated calls to the hotline for information, only to be told they have dialled a wrong number.
The work on the area's eight bridges will begin on August 3 and will cut the road down to two lanes.
Work will be suspended for the August bank holiday and over Christmas and New Year. People who cannot avoid the junctions are advised to allow for extra journey time.
Steve Bell, Highways Agency project manager, said: "After 20 years of heavy use, the bridges are in urgent need of repair and refurbishment.
"Long delays are inevitable at peak times and extra time should be allowed for journeys. People should consider using public transport."
Restrictions will be put in place on junction 11 and the junction 12 access road will be closed. The telephone number to call for more information is: 08457 504030. LONG delays are expected on the M60 early next month when essential bridge works begin on a stretch of road near Eccles.
