WASN'T it just dandy of John Coxhead of Farington (The Citizen 09/08/01) to advocate the granting of city status to Preston?
This prestigious award would be of no benefit to the people of Preston and would do no more to enhance the status of the elected representatives who would doubtless expect the residents to fork out for new ceremonial outfits and maybe also a city hall to replace the present municipal building.
This would add to the already crippling burden of council tax.
Prestonians would seemingly be financially advantaged if Preston were demoted to a village or urban district within the county.
City status? No way!
