A GROUP of Bury FC fans are boycotting the club's official shop, claiming it is disloyal to the Shakers.

They are angry the Birthdays store at Gigg Lane is selling Manchester United merchandise instead of stocking its shelves exclusively with Bury gear.

And they will not buy any goods from any Birthdays shop until the decision is reversed.

Some supporters have taken to the terraces with the Birthdays logo on their Bury shirts blacked out, and plan to demonstrate before Monday's Bank Holiday home match against Swindon.

Lee Devenport, of Bury's Alternative Supporters Enterprise, said: "These actions are nothing short of a disgrace.

"The independent identity of Bury FC may be something which chairman Terry Robinson and his board are prepared to sell down the river, but for the majority of Bury fans some things cannot be bought at any price."

Mr Devenport claims that his stance is backed by other supporters.

Mr Robinson pointed out that the only Man Utd merchandise the shop sold are nick-nacks like paper and pencils, all below £2. It did not sell replica shirts or kit.

He said: "The shop provides a service to Bury supporters.

"It is a major superstore, something the club has not had before.

"The store decided it would sell United nick-nacks when we played them in a recent friendly.

"The sale was successful, and they decided to continue to sell it.

"Birthdays is very supportive of the club and has been our major sponsor for 10 years. The club accepts the thinking behind it. Whatever it does to make the shop more viable benefits the club.

"If some people boycott the shop, that's their choice."
