Latest provisional figures reveal that 275 UK workers were killed at work between April, 2000 and March, 2001.
During this period 152,628 workers were injured.
Mr Bill Callaghan, chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, said: "Each week in the UK, an average of five people are killed at work and nearly 3,000 are injured. These deaths and injuries can be prevented -- and with the right action we can make sure they are."
Twenty organisations from the North-west received regional awards for their efforts during last year's European Week. They included Park Cakes (Bolton) Ltd in Bella Street, Bolton.
