A PUB in Westhougton pulled out all the stops during a fun day to raise money for a special baby care unit.

The Wheatsheaf, on Market Street, had music, dance and other fun activities when it held its own mini-festival.

With attractions based around the pub's parking facilities, the event was called Party in the (car) Park and was the brainchild of "mine host", Mike Williamson.

Mike and his pub team were spurred to act after hearing of baby Demi-Lee Ashcroft, from Hindley, who beat all the odds after being born 12 weeks early.

Demi-Lee weighed just 1lb 14oz when she was delivered by Caesarian section at Billinge Hospital, Wigan, and doctors gave her 30 per cent chance of survival.

Thanks to the skills of the special care baby team, Demi-Lee pulled through, to the relief of 19-year-old mum Leanne Beardsworth and partner Carl Ashcroft.

Demi-Lee's grandmother, Sandra Beardsworth, is a barmaid at The Wheatsheaf, which is why the pub stepped in to help support the special care unit.

Mr Williamson said that by the end of the day they had raised £1,500, which was handed over to Staff Nurse Sarah Winstanley from the baby unit.
