THE final week of fixtures arrived at last, heralded by the Wanderers' amazing win over a stunned Liverpool. Could any of our local sides emulate the giant killing act by defeating Manchester-based Olympia?

Acdoco were the challengers on Tuesday night as Olympia remained on target with a 34-12 clear victory. Both umpires agreed that the spirit in which the game was played could not be bettered and gave both teams the maximum points. So far so good, but the sterner test awaited Olympia the following evening. Could they get the better of second placed Howcroft?

On Tuesday Howcroft had to beat Primrose, only two points below them and hot on their heels in order to stay in contention to steal the Section A title. With the lead fluctuating throughout and never more than a goal or two either way, Howcroft eventually ground out the victory thanks to some startling interceptions by Elaine Beattie.

Originals breathed a huge sigh of relief as they fought back from a four goal deficit at half time. Needing a win to remain in Section A they clawed their way back into the game with Chequers, thanks to some distance shots from Maureen Pearson, with assists from Linda Clelland. In the end one goal was enough to keep them up.

As luck would have it, the final match of the season was the most thrilling. A win for Olympia or Howcroft gave them the title.

It was a match worthy of the build up with both teams displaying some superb skills and athleticism.

The game seemed to be moving Howcroft's way with a two goal buffer at half time, but Olympia drew deep on their reserves, and with steely resolve set about demolishing Howcroft's lead and establishing their own.

The two protagonists earned one another's respect, as well as the umpires, as the closely fought game closed 21-18 in favour of Olympia, the 2001 League Champions.
