I AM responding to the news article in Bolton Evening News (Page 5, Monday August 20th) and subsequent letters from Steve Tonge (Tuesday August 28th) and Jeff Layer (Saturday September 1st) regarding the motorist who wants to appeal against his speeding offence.

I would like to point out that the news article incorrectly links the speeding offence to my views on obscured road traffic signs. The particular 30mph signs on Chorley New Road can be seen in sufficient time for any motorist to reduce their speed. Jeff Layer comments that the sign on the left hand side of the road is obscured, however there is still approx 50m of clear view.

The sign on the right hand side of the road is clearly visible for some 200m. Anyone who is accurately scanning the road ahead cannot fail to see one of the 30mph signs. Given the circumstances I would not have allowed the name of Bolton Advanced Motorists be used to "back" the case of the speeding motorist.

Steve Tonge is correct when he says that Bolton Metro are "selling us short". In addition to their failure to ensure that all road signs are clearly visible, they have failed to follow the trend adopted by many other councils in trying to ensure motorists are aware of the speed limit. Other councils now "paint" the speed limit on the road to re-inforce the road

sign, a warning which any motorist should be able to see. This would make an enormous contribution to road safety.
