CLOWNS are set to turn Bolton into the world's comedy capital.

More than 40 clowns from 15 countries, including New Zealand and Australia, will be joining clowns from the UK for a convention in the town.

There will even be an appearance by the Japanese clown troupe Open Sesame, which has never performed in Europe before.

The event has been organised by Bolton Town Centre Company and Clown International and promises to be the biggest to be held in the town yet.

Ron Moody, film star and life president of Clowns International, will be on hand to keep the clowns in order.

So many events are planned in and around the town centre, there is bound to be something for everyone -- whether it is to learn a new skill or to be entertained.

Visitors to the festival can catch the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; Francois Jester Coco, who will attempt to break the world record for hat spinning, and Squirt the Elephant.

Youngsters can exchange free giggle notes, which will be given out during the festival, for sweets.

Children accompanied by adults who see the Giggle Note Clown and challenge him with the phrase "You are the Giggle Note Clown and I claim the prize" will win a mystery prize from Debenhams.

A spokesman for the Bolton Town Centre Company said: "We are thrilled with the magnificent response from clowns who are jetting in from around the world to attend the event."
