Bookmaker Fred Done's weekly column
THIS football season just gets better and better: Wanderers on top, Svens boys stick five up the Germans then go top of the group with only Greece to play (at Old Trafford).
Burnley, Rochdale, Man City, Blackburn and even Everton are doing well. It's fan-betting tastic! What next?
Well, Bolton saw off the so called "Cup" specialists last week, now its face to face with and those tough guys in Leeds. I'll give you 110/1 on Ricketts to score first and Bolton to win 2-1. Leeds lost 10 league games last season so they are not as formidable as they make out. They were lucky in the European games and they are defiantly beatable at Elland Road so.... Bolton to Win 1-0 11/1, 2-0 28/1, 2-1 20/1, 3-0 66/1.
Who's gonna score first? Ricketts 7/1, Holdsworth 9/1, Nishizana 9/1, Pederson 9/1, Frandsen 18/1, Nolan 25/1. If you have a fiver on Nolan to score first and Bolton to win 2-1 you'd win £1,125.
The Champions League starts on Tuesday and as usual all the big names are included. - How will the four British teams do? The Scots haven't won anything in Europe since the Second World War but I fancy Celtic to have a decent run this season. Mind you, with Juventus & Porto in their group I think they'll have to win their home games and beat Rosenburg away to get through. But Man U, Arsenal and the scousers should qualify for the serious stage. I'll give you an accumulator on all four clubs to win their group - £10 will give you £346.50 or individually you can have: Man United - 1/2 Celtic - 9/2 Arsenal - evens Liverpool -11/10.
Can an English team win the the Champions League? I'll give you 7/2. Or you can have 11/1 on an all British final. I think we can all start to look forward to the World Cup 2002 with a bit more optimism - not just for England but the Irish always amaze me with the results they dig out. After the German result last weekend the odds on England to actually win the World Cup are now 9/1 - the same as Brazil!! Which just shows you how crazy this business is. With final group games taking place in October we'll soon know which European teams will be going to Japan and I'll let you know the best odds and best bets.
Here's a local treble for this weekend - if United, City and Wanderers all win I'll give you 16/1. Have a good week!
