CHILDREN in Bolton will soon be taught the truths about cancer as teachers tackle the taboo subject in the classroom.
Three primary schools and two secondary schools in the town have asked for special education packs from the Macmillan Cancer Relief Trust.
They are expected to use the teaching packs in the classroom next spring as part of Cancer Talk Week from March 4 to 8.
The initiative has been drawn up to help teachers answer difficult questions and dispel myths about the disease asked by pupils.
In a survey by the national charity, 20 per cent of 12 to 14 year olds believe cancer to be contagious and 74 per cent believe cancer "always kills."
A spokesman for Macmillan Cancer Relief said: "Bolton has given a good response with five schools requesting teaching packs.
"It is important that teachers and children approach the subject in a senstive way and it aims to increase awareness and encourage discussion in the classroom."
