A MAN who broke into a house and stabbed a man in the head with a screwdriver has been jailed.

Alec Walker attacked Stephen Jones while he was in bed, punching him in the face and head and taking his keys.

Walker, aged 38, formerly of Cameron Street, Bolton, appeared at Bolton Crown Court for sentence.

He admitted unlawfully wounding Mr Jones at a house in Charles Holden Street, Bolton, on March 26.

Jonathan Dickinson, prosecuting, said Mr Jones had been in bed at 1.30am when he heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

The door burst open and the light switched on. He saw Walker standing there with a screwdriver.

Walker accused Mr Jones of seeing his girlfriend, ripped the phone out and stabbed Mr Jones in the head.

Mr Jones tried to escape but Walker punched and kicked him repeatedly.

Neighbours saw Mr Jones covered in blood and called police and ambulance.

Mr Jones suffered two black eyes, lost a tooth and suffered bruising and swelling to his face.

Walker was arrested later in Hawthorn Street, Deane, where he attempted to escape by jumping from a window.

A blood-soaked anorak was found in a bin bag and DNA tests linked blood found on the jacket to Mr Jones.

The court was told Walker had a record of violence and was out on licence from a nine-year sentence, which still had two years left to run.

Stephen Meadowcroft, defending, said Walker had been placed in care aged seven, where he suffered violence.

Judge John Roberts ordered Walker to complete 18 months outstanding from his previous sentence and jailed him for two and-a-half years.
