MANCHESTER Airport has opened a new secure cycle centre. It is part of the airport's green commuter plan which aims to reduce lone travel-to-work car journeys.
The 19,000 people who are based at the airport are being asked to consider travel alternatives.
Staff using the centre can make use of the fully-equipped workshop, managed by a full-time mechanic.
Others benefits include an information centre, a replacement bike service, hire or loan of bikes, a collection and repair service, showers and changing rooms, secure lockers, ironing facilities and tea and coffee machines.
Members of the airport's bike user group (BUG) have the option to buy high-tech cycling clothing at cost price and cycling equipment at discounted price.
There are currently 16 parking sites with spaces for 230 cycles and 46 showers.
Future plans include upgrading of the showers by adding changing rooms with clothes dryers, mirrors and hairdryers.
Cllr Brian Harrison, Chairman of Manchester Airport, said: "Green commuting has been a key issue for the airport for some time as we realise we have to play our part in helping to reduce the number of cars on the road to ease congestion."
