A NEW book from the Institute of Directors aims to inform directors about their roles and responsibilities. The IoD says The Company Director's Guide is the essential advice source for all new and existing company directors in the UK.
It offers practical and reliable information, based on accepted good practice and the legal framework, on how
to survive and flourish as a business leader, whatever the size of company.
Two years ago a survey of IoD members showed that many directors were unaware of their duties and found the combination of statute and case law confusing.
This new Guide offers clear guidance in a straightforward and accessible way on many issues of concern to individual directors, their companies, and the boards on which they serve.
Some of the questions answered in the book include:
How are a director's duties defined in law?
What are the roles of the board and directors?
In what circumstances, and why, can the law penalise directors?
How may the performance of a board be assessed?
The Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP, formerly Secretary of State for Trade and Industry said: "I warmly welcome the continuing efforts of the Institute of Directors to encourage and disseminate good practice in corporate
governance in the private, public and voluntary sectors".
The guide costs £35 per copy and can be ordered online at www.iod.com/cdguide. For information, contact the IoD Books Department (tel: 020 7766 8866; fax: 020 7766 8833).
