IN February this year, I attended a meeting at Westhoughton Town Hall regarding plans for traffic calming measures for Holden Lea and Back Church Street.

Councillor Wilkinson and the Council Officer attending assured me, along with other residents present at the meeting, that the money for these measures was available, and that work could be completed quickly.

On behalf of a local resident of Wingates, I contacted the Council recently to find out what progress had been made over the last six months. The answer was -- none. I cannot say I was surprised.

The Council Officer attending the meeting in February brought with him a traffic survey that was 15 years out of date; a survey that took no account of the effects Wingates Industrial Estate, Middlebrook and the Reebok Stadium has had upon the volume of traffic through Wingates.

Westhoughton Town Council's handling of the provision of CCTV in the town centre has been a shambles and a financial nightmare. These facts alone didn't inspire me with confidence that the work requested could be carried out quickly.

Following this year's above-inflation hike in the Council Tax parish precept, when are the people of Westhoughton going to start get value for their money?
