TWO 16-year-old boys were assaulted by a gang of Asian men in what police are treating as a racist attack.

The teenagers were punched and kicked following an argument on one of the rides at the funfair on The Rock, Bury.

Det Sgt Duncan Heywood, of Bury police, said: "These two white lads had been involved in an altercation on the waltzers and then decided to leave.

"While on The Rock they were confronted by between 20 and 25 Asian males, aged between 12 and 18."

He added: "The 16-year-olds were chased. One of the lads was pushed to the ground and kicked about the head and body.

"His friend tried to stop the attack and he was then punched in the face."

One of the injured boys was treated in Fairfield General Hospital for cuts, grazes and bruises to the back of his head and to his chest. The other teenager sustained bruising to his jaw.

Because of certain remarks made during the incident, police are now treating the assault as racist.

Anyone with information about the assault, which happened at 10.15pm on Saturday, should ring Bury operational police unit on 856 8157.
