BUS passengers in Bolton are set to benefit from a £225,000 regeneration scheme.

Plans for the money to be used to revamp pavements around 64 bus stops of the 501 service from Thynne Street to Farnworth Bus Station have been approved by councillors.

The route had been deemed Bolton's "highest priority" by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive due to its poor quality of pavements and shelters.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: "Bus passengers will be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant bus stop environment when the work is completed." Council chiefs said the work will be carried out in three stages.

Work will be conducted on 21 inbound and outbound stops in Thynne Street, Nelson Street and Bolton Street in the first phase. Another 21 stops in Bradford Road, Minerva Road, Redgate Way, Plodder Lane and Highfield Road will then be revamped.

The final stage of work will focus on 22 stops in Highfield Road, Harrowby Street, Market Street and King Street. Under the plan, it is not proposed to provide shelters at locations where they are not currently cited.

The money has been secured under the Transport Infrastructure Fund. Bolton Council Highways Chiefs are to select a contractor to conduct the improvements before work begins. By Paul Britton.
