REGULARS at a Bolton pub are angry over a decision to pull it down two years sooner than they expected. More than 160 have signed a petition protesting at the closure of the Waterloo Tavern on Folds Road. Darts and dominoes teams have had to disband and a men's trip to Jersey has been cancelled because the pub is under a compulsory purchase order. It could be demolished in weeks.

SIR, - Too many doctors are going away at the same time. My husband was taken ill recently and we found that our own doctor and three others on the same road were away for a fortnight. We eventually called the only other doctor available. He is not a young man, and couldn't be blamed for arriving late through trying to cope with the work of five doctors. Why can't we have substitute doctors and let the family doctors have their well-earned rests in turns? Mrs Sutcliffe, 24, Vermont-street, Bolton.

MAWDSLEY-street Chapel, after being closed for cleaning and beautifying, was opened on Sunday, when sermons were preached morning and evening by the pastor, the Rev Robert Best. The collections towards the expenses incurred amounted to £90, which has subsequently been made up to £100.
AT the annual session of county magistrates at Preston, on Thursday, four additional constables were ordered for the Bolton Petty Sessional Division. One of these will be stationed at Great Lever, a second at Edgworth, a third at Over Hulton, and the fourth will, in all probability, be stationed at the new County Sessions Room at Haulgh. 25 YEARS AGO
