PUPILS got the chance to see the result of their handiwork when The Millennium Tapestry went on display in Bolton.
Youngsters from all over the country helped to create the remarkable piece of history and 10 Bolton schools were among the many who took part.
It all started in 1999 when schools were asked to take part in the scheme which involved creating an enormous tapestry to mark the Millennium.
Beaumont Primary, in Wendover Drive, Bolton, was one of the 10 local schools to sign up for the project.
Acting deputy head Mrs Valerie Middleton explained: "We had a choice of subjects to pick from and we decided to sew part of the body."
Other subjects which could be covered included friends, fairs and festivals, journeys and play.
Every child at Beaumont Primary took part in the project, around 240 youngsters in total, all adding a stitch, or more, to the school's section of the tapestry. Mrs Middleton said: "Teachers and parents also joined in." All around the country children, teachers and parents were doing the same and the idea was that the full tapestry would be displayed in the Millennium Dome. Unfortunately it was never displayed in the Dome.
Mrs Middleton said: "So we were really pleased when we heard it would be displayed in Bolton."
Although the full tapestry was not displayed at the exhibition, held in The Premier Suite at the Reebok Stadium, there was a wide variety of sections of tapestry to see.
The 10 local primary schools involved in the project were Beaumont Primary; Eatock Primary, Westhoughton; Heathfield Primary, Bolton; High Lawn Primary, Bolton; Pikes Lane Primary, Bolton; St Bede's CE Primary, Bolton; St Columba's RC Primary, Bolton; St Peter's CE Primary, Farnworth; St Stephen's CE Primary, Kearsley; Westhoughton Parochial CE Primary.
