BURY'S libraries have been given a £550,000 funding boost which is set to bring about major changes to take facilities well and truly into the 21st Century.

The money, £330,000 through the Government's New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and a further £220,000 coming from Bury Council, will be used to significantly increase the provision of computers and improve the hi-tech management systems used by the libraries.

The NOF monies have come to Bury through the People's Network Project and, as a result, over 100 modern PC's will now be provided in the 11 libraries across the Borough. The most significant expansion of provision will be at Prestwich, Radcliffe and Ramsbottom libraries where CD-ROM networks will also be installed.

The intention is to gradually withdraw the current charges for internet access at libraries, to achieve a free service by March 2003.
