A LEIGH rugby hero's collection of medals and memorabilia has fetched £1,538 at an auction by Sotheby's in London.

Gold medals awarded to Leigh Rugby League Club captain and England International, Harry Woods, sold at £352.

A 1930's red and white hooped Lancashire County Championship jersey and a 1930's yellow and dark blue Liverpool Stanley Club shirt sold for £329 and a Harry Woods collection including dinner menus, programmes from Australia and France, post-cards and pictures also sold for £329.

International caps and a shirt sold for the highest amount at £528.

The items were sold to three private buyers.

Mr Woods, a second-row forward, was born in Leigh in 1911 and died in Wigan in 1989. He was Leigh's club captain at the outbreak of the Second World War.

He played in six test matches and three internationals for England between 1935 and 1937 and represented Lancashire at county level five times.

Before playing for Leigh, he played for Wigan Highfield, Liverpool Stanley and Leeds. He played his last professional game for Leigh on May 17, 1947.
