YOU may recall that on Saturday, September 15, I printed a poem called My Home Town sent to me by reader Mr William P. Marfleet, of Crompton Way, who had found it while going through some papers of his late wife.
"It is initialled E.G. Can any reader tell me who wrote it, and when?", he asked. The last line of the poem mentioned "Bolton-on-the Moors", so I presumed it was someone local.
I have had a call from Mr Robert Gidman, of Valletts Lane, who tells me that the poem was written by his sister Emily, when she was about 12 years old (she is now 87), and attending Church Road School. Emily married a Bolton minister, Frank Hamer, and they went to live in the Isle of Man; Mr Gidman spoke to his sister a few days ago about the poem, and she was delighted to know that it had "surfaced" again. Incidentally, if anyone remembers Emily and would like to contact her, she lives at 1 Hillary Close, Ballachurry Park, Onchan, Isle of Man, 1N3 4BF.
So the mystery of E.G. is solved.
