RETIRED miner Fred Dover celebrated his 90th birthday in fine style ... when five generations of his own family arrived to throw him a surprise party.
And great-great grandfather Mr Dover, of Firwood Avenue, Farnworth, had another reason to smile as his birthday party was the first time he had ever tasted champagne.
Widower Mr Dover has four children, seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. They all live in the Bolton area and many of them joined him for his birthday celebrations, including songs and cake.
Mr Dover's daughter Edna McCoy, aged 65, of Begonia Avenue, said: "He had a smashing day and was really excited surrounded by most of his large family. It was a total surprise to him and he had a fantastic day. It was the first time he had ever had champagne in his life. It really bucked him up."
Mr Dover enjoys reading and watching television. He also adores his pet Jack Russell called Jack - who never leaves his side.
