A SERIAL flasher who confessed to committing crimes police did not even know he was connected to has been jailed.

Bury Magistrates heard that Keith Shaw's offending went back over a long period and had continued despite various rehabilitation options being tried.

The court heard how after being apprehended near the scene of an alleged incident during which a man had exposed himself to a woman passer by, he denied being involved.

Miss Claire Stevens, prosecuting, said that an identification parade was being organised when Shaw contacted the police and asked to be re-interviewed.

He then not only admitted the offence but told officers about a further six matters he wanted to be taken into consideration.

However, while he was waiting for his court appearance he then carried out a series of similar offences.

Undergrowth

He was only caught after a police chase which ended with the force helicopter being called out to track him down after he hid in thick undergrowth.

In court Shaw, aged 39, from Massey Street, Bury, pleaded guilty to four charges of lewdly and obscenely exposing himself. He was sentenced to two months in prison.

Mr Philip Thompson, defending, said: "This offending has been going on for many, many years and a number of options have been tried.

"On this occasion he puts the offending down to depression at the time. His father had died and he had lost his job.

"His actions seem to be some form of comfort or escapism but he finds it very difficult to put into words just why he does it. However, his offences have never been anything more than exposing himself. He has never made threats but it has been going on for so long."
