AMBITIOUS plans to build a two-storey hotel in Horwich have been put on hold until planning chiefs and councillors visit the site.

Under the plans, a 60-bed Travel Inn would be attached to the side of the Beehive pub in Chorley New Road. The proposals would also create an extra 106 car parking spaces.

The plans were deferred from a previous Bolton Council meeting but applicants Punch Travel Inns have since amended their proposals.

The company agreed to retain access to Chorley New Road and Austin Lane as exit and entrance points and improve visibility from both junctions.

But councillors voted to view the site for themselves before deciding whether the development, which is expected to create a host of new jobs, is given the final go-ahead.

A total of 16 letters of complaint have been received by the council from residents fearing the hotel will cause traffic, highway, noise and visibility problems.

The Beehive pub is situated next to the northern side of the roundabout junction of Chorley New Road with De Havilland Way. A Wacky Warehouse and play area are already next to the pub.

Council planning chiefs say the hotel would be sited on the existing play area and park of the pub. It would be a 'T' shaped development.

Councillors have deferred the decision to conduct a site visit after Town Hall planners recommended the plan be approved subject to conditions including disabled access, more planted trees and appropriate building materials.
