I WAS slightly amused while reading the BEN this evening, when I came to the Looking Back page, and saw sugar rationing ended in Britain this day 1953.
The other day I was in Age Concern, Ashburner Street, Bolton, and, after I had had my dinner, I went back to the counter to buy two more mugs of tea. Before the new management took over they were 40p each, but now they are 50p each.
Sugar is kept out of reach of customers behind the counter in small square packets. The girl serving me gave me two and I had asked for four, but when I said I wanted two more, she replied "You'll have to pay extra." I said I thought sugar rationing ended after the last war finished.
