I STRONGLY disagree with Julie Holt, who wrote in the BEN on September 28 that every shopping basket should include a variety of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and wholegrains.
Vegetarians and vegans the world over live healthily without eating animal products. Don't these advisors and so-called 'experts' have access to the latest research and up-to date information? Protein, calcium and Vitamin B12 in meat and dairy are also in soy products, nuts, beans, pulses, green leafy vegetables, parsley and other plant foods.
A cardiologist said recently, on World Heart Day, that it is a common misconception that fish and chicken are absolutely safe and recommended products for heart patients. Scientifically, fish and chicken are safer in comparison to red meat and offal, but they have their own toxic liabilities such as accumulation of pernicious chemicals like mercury, pesticides and chlorinated hydrocarbons in the body. Therefore their consumption has to be cut down as much as possible.
