THREE thousand Bolton people set off today to spend the first day of the holiday at Blackpool, or at Morecambe, where the Illuminations provide a grand climax for those who don't mind arriving home late at night. A hundred coaches, which took them, had all been booked up beforehand. Another 12 coaches set off for North Wales.

ANOTHER victory, hard gained, by beating Manchester United 1-0 at Burnden Park, kept the Wanderers on Top of Division 1. Lofthouse scored the goal.

THE partial eclipse of the sun was easily visible in Bolton today. The maximum phase of the eclipse was at 1.07pm, when one-sixth of the sun's disc was obscured. The eclipse ended at 1.53pm.

THE Westhoughton annual wakes were again celebrated on Sunday and Monday last. Although the weather was unfavourable, the village was alive with visitors on both days, and on Sunday the insignia of the village - a cow's head - gaily decorated, was displayed to the admiration of many beholders. In the neighbourhood of the church, on Monday, a number of stalls were opened, and proved a source of attraction for the youngsters.

During the course of Sunday, the Westhoughton Temperance Society held open-air meetings, which were well attended, and in the afternoon the same day, a united scholars' service, in connection with the Westhoughton Nonconformist schools, was held in the Congregational Schoolroom. Over 1,100 teachers, scholars and friends were present.

ON Monday, the brass padlock makers of Willenhall, South Staffordshire, struck for an advance of 10 per cent, stating that they had no advance for 27 years.

Most of the North Wales colliers who struck against a 10 per cent reduction last Monday have resumed work at the lower rate.
